Because Hope Doesn’t Have a Season
Who says Christmas only comes once a year?
At The Sandbox, we’ve learned something beautiful over the years: sometimes the people carrying the heaviest burdens need Christmas the most… even if it’s the middle of July. While everyone else is reaching for sunscreen and flip-flops, we’re dusting off the tinsel, hanging ornaments on palm trees, and reminding families that hope doesn’t follow a calendar. Kindness never takes a summer vacation, and Christmas spirit shines just as brightly beneath blue skies as it does beneath twinkling lights.
It All Started with An Elf
Christmas in July 2025 began with a simple question: What if we could multiply our impact and reach even more families with the joy, wonder, and generosity of Christmas… even in the middle of summer?
That idea became Project Elf, one of The Sandbox’s Professional Scholar initiatives. During our very first Christmas in July, our volunteer “elves” hand-delivered 500 gifts to every adult receiving treatment at Novant Health Weisiger Cancer Institute. Every patient received a gift, not because it was December, but because everyone deserves moments of joy, encouragement, and the reminder that someone cares.
Watching smiles appear where worry had settled reminded us that the magic of Christmas isn’t found in the date on the calendar. It’s found in the kindness we choose to share.
As it turns out, Santa’s helpers look just as good in flip-flops.
Growing into Something Even Bigger
The following year, Christmas in July 2026 took on a new purpose as we partnered with Levine Children’s Hospital. As we dreamed about how to multiply an even greater impact, we realized we wanted to offer families more than a gift. We wanted to offer comfort, encouragement, and hope they could carry with them long after the day was over.
That’s when we were excited to bring back Blessing Bags!
Each bag is thoughtfully packed with items designed to brighten long hospital days and remind families they never walk this journey alone. Every Blessing Bag includes Kim Angeli’s Gratitude Journal, along with snacks, treats, bubbles, bookmarks, small gifts, encouragement items, and little surprises carefully chosen to bring smiles during difficult moments.
Sometimes it’s a journal that helps someone notice blessings in the middle of uncertainty. Sometimes it’s a snack after a long day of appointments. Sometimes it’s bubbles that bring laughter into a hospital room. Every item has a purpose, and together they send one powerful message:
You are loved. You are seen. And you are never alone.
The Best Part Isn’t What’s Inside the Bag
As meaningful as the Blessing Bags are, they aren’t our favorite part of Christmas in July.
The best part is watching our community come together to pack them.
Every year, volunteers gather around tables overflowing with journals, snacks, toys, bubbles, ribbons, bookmarks, and encouragement cards. Christmas music fills the room. Conversations quickly turn into friendships. Families serve alongside students, businesses, churches, and community members who all share one common goal: bringing hope to someone else.
There is something incredibly special about seeing people of all ages working side by side, excited to gather, excited to give, and excited to be part of something much bigger than themselves.
By the end of the afternoon, all of the Blessing Bags have been packed, but something else has happened too. Our volunteers leave just as encouraged as the families receiving the bags.
A Little Christmas Magic in the Summer Sun
Christmas in July may feature palm trees instead of pine trees and sunshine instead of snowflakes, but the heart behind it never changes.
It’s about showing up for families during some of the hardest days of their lives.
It’s about replacing fear with encouragement, isolation with community, and difficult moments with unexpected joy.
It’s about reminding a parent sitting beside a hospital bed that an entire community is cheering them on.
Because hope doesn’t melt in the July heat.
More Than a Tradition
Today, Christmas in July has become one of The Sandbox’s favorite annual traditions. It reminds us that every donated item matters, every volunteer matters, and every act of kindness matters. Whether someone purchases a gift, packs a Blessing Bag, writes an encouraging note, or simply gives their time, they become part of something far greater than themselves.
Every Blessing Bag carries more than what’s inside.
It carries hope.
It carries encouragement.
It carries compassion.
Most of all, it carries the promise that every Sandbox family deserves to hear: You don’t have to walk this journey alone.
So each summer, we’ll keep decking the halls with palm fronds, singing Christmas carols under the sunshine, and proving that Christmas spirit is welcome all year long.
After all, it’s never too early, or too late, to make someone’s season bright.
